NEW WEBSITE FROM EARLY FEBURARY 2010! Happy New Year!

       Events

Apart from being involved with many liturgies, Musica Sacra also holds concerts with or without other visiting musicians.

One of Musica Sacra's aims is to provide the younger generation with a chance to be exposed to the types of music which are no longer part of our day-to-day living. Choristers will also have a chance to "have a go" at producing this music by themselves.

Most of our workshops will end with either a liturgy or a recital.

BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament is a devotional ceremony celebrated within the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as in some Anglican Churches, Western Rite Orthodox churches, and Latinised Eastern Catholic Churches.

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament begins with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament (i.e., consecrated Host) in a monstrance set upon the altar. The liturgy includes singing the ancient Latin hymns written by St Thomas Aquinas, O Salutaris Hostia and Tantum Ergo, followed by the benediction proper. The celebrant holds the monstrance wearing a humeral veil covering his shoulders, arms and hands, and then blesses the faithful with the Blessed Sacrament by tracing the sign of the cross with the monstrance held steadily upright before him. The liturgy concludes with the Divine Praises and Psalm 117 with the antiphon, "Let us forever adore the Most Holy Sacrament."

TENEBRAE

The name Tenebrae (the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows”) has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services (matins and
Lauds) of the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be celebrated on the preceding evenings.

Apart from the chant of the Lamentations (in which each verse is introduced by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet), the most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains.

Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolising the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the hidden candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence.

ECUMENICAL COMPLINE

"Compline" or Night Prayer is the last of the seven prayer services of the monastic day. It is accompanied by the chanting of the psalms and reflecting one's day in various ways.

Musica Sacra, together with St Andrew's Singers, will offer the music for Compline in the Ambrosian, Gregorian and Anglican musical traditions. Members of the congregation are welcomed to sing along to the psalms and most chants, allowing a fuller participation, hence bringing peace to one's inner selves.

In this event, you will see the chant accompanying the liturgy with incense (in some cases, and only very minor) and candles. Do not be put off by the liturgy, but allowing an open heart to see the beauty of this ancient music in its original form.

Musica Sacra will perform works by Thomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), pieces of Gregorian Chant and will also at this concert make the launch of Jack Ho's composition, Missa de Caelo, a Gregorian Chant Mass Setting Jack composed (in original notation) after returning from his studies in Europe.

Hosted by Professor Toh Swee-Hin, of the Griffith University (Nathan Campus) Multi-Faith Centre. This evening concert is supported by the Queensland Forum of Christians, Jews, and Moslems.

ADVENT CAROL SERVICE

This is a traditional candle-lit service where we celebrate the season before Christmas. It is well known in many old churches and college chapels in England, notably, Kings College at Cambridge, where we based our format upon.

During this service, the choir will sing carols (with some Christmas flavour!) and other beautiful music as well as ancient chants. Readings are taken from the Bible, telling the ancient story of Christmas.

Come and be part of this beautiful candle-lit service where you'll hear beautiful music and sing along to all the old favourite carols like: "Once In Royal David's City" and "O Come O Ye Faithful"! You'll not be disappointed!!

Since this service falls on the first Sunday of December, it will replace the normal Evensong. You may also like to be reminded that there'll be a special Festive Evensong on 21 December.
