Jack
H.Y. Ho
Obl.OSB
- Director
Jack was Trained at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, and was Director of Music for several parishes in Sydney before he moved to Brisbane to continue his tertiary studies in Music Education at the University of Queensland in 2004. Jack’s passion for music led him to study opportunities overseas. While traveling through Europe, Jack enjoyed opportunities to study liturgical music at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome and researched at the Vatican Library. He also traveled to France and met and studied Gregorian Chant with well known scholars Dom Daniel Saunier OSB and the Choirmaster Fr Yves-Marie Lelièvre OSB at Solesmes Abbey. Jack was elected Fellow by The Guild of Musicians and Singers (London) in August 2008. Music has taken Jack to many different parts of the world. He has performed in Italy, France, Austria, the USA and Canada, and parts of Asia and Australia. In 2006, Jack composed a complete Mass in Gregorian Chant, Missa de Caelo, in which he used the notation system of the 10th Century (Square Notation). The Choirmaster of Solesmes Abbey commented on this composition as “…have a beautiful unity in style”, “highly authentic” and “very pleasing to chant”. Jack is very honoured that the first performance of this Mass in 2007 enjoyed the presence of The Chancellor of Griffith University (QLD), and representatives from many other Abrahamic Faiths (Christians, Jews, and Muslims). Internationally, Jack is one of the very few active composers of Gregorian Chant in its most authentic form, and is most likely to be the youngest! Back home in Brisbane, Jack teaches voice, piano, organ and liturgical music, and is frequently involved in the liturgical music scenes.
